RevMoto's Guide to Winter Storage: Keeping Your Motorbike in Top Shape - Winterising Your Motorcycle

Winter is approaching, and for many motorcycle enthusiasts, it's time to bid farewell to the open road temporarily. Winter storage is not just about parking your bike in the garage; it's about ensuring that when spring arrives, your motorcycle is ready to hit the streets without a hitch. In this guide, brought to you by RevMoto, we'll walk you through the essential steps to prepare your motorbike for a cosy winter slumber, focusing on the mechanical aspects that will keep your two-wheeled companion in prime condition.

  • Oil and Fluids:

a. Fresh Oil and Filter: Start by changing the oil and oil filter. Fresh oil ensures proper lubrication and protects your engine during the dormant months.

b. Fuel System Maintenance: Add a fuel stabiliser to the tank to prevent fuel from breaking down and causing clogs in the carburetor or fuel injectors. Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the stabilised fuel through the system. This is not recommended for long term storage over 3 months.

c. Coolant Check: Ensure your motorcycle's coolant is suitable for colder temperatures. If necessary, replace it and inspect for any leaks in the cooling system.

  • Battery Care:

a. Battery Tender Connection: Connect your motorcycle to a quality trickle charger. This ensures a consistent charge and prevents the battery from draining during the storage period.

b. Battery Inspection: Check the battery for any signs of corrosion. Clean the terminals and make sure all connections are secure.

  • Tyre and Brake Check:

a. Tyre Pressure: Adjust tyre pressure to the manufacturer's specifications. Properly inflated tyres prevent flat spots and ensure a smoother ride when you take your bike out of storage.

b. Brake System Inspection: Check the brake fluid levels and inspect the brake pads. Replace worn pads and bleed the brake system to maintain optimal stopping power. c. Brake Fluid: Check the moisture content in the brake fluid using a brake fluid tester. If you are not familiar with this, we recommend you take it to your local motorcycle mechanic to check.

  • Storage Preparation:

a. Use a Quality Motorcycle Cover: Invest in a breathable, waterproof motorcycle cover to shield your bike from dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations.

b. Elevate the Bike: If possible, place your motorcycle on a stand to relieve pressure on the tires and prevent flat spots.

c. Exhaust Protection: Plug the exhaust pipe to prevent unwanted visitors like critters and moisture from entering your exhaust system.

  • Rust Prevention:

a. Apply Rust Inhibitor: Protect metal components by applying a rust inhibitor to susceptible areas. This is particularly important if your storage space is prone to humidity.

b. Lubricate Moving Parts: Apply lubricant to moving parts such as the chain to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation when you bring your bike out of hibernation.

RevMoto's winter storage guide emphasises the importance of meticulous preparation to keep your motorbike in optimal condition during the winter months. By addressing the mechanical aspects outlined above, you'll not only pave the way for a trouble-free start in the spring but also extend the life of your motorcycle. Remember, a well-maintained bike is a reliable and enjoyable ride. Happy winter storage, and we look forward to seeing you back on the road come spring!
